Schloss Ehrenbreistein is a fortress located at the
east bank of river Rhine in Koblenz; Germany (Rhineland-Palatinate state). The
fort is now a part of UNESCO; world heritage site since 2002. The fort is a
must visit for history lovers.
This marvellous fort is built on a hill named;
Ehrenbreitstein. The magnificent fort has a history dating back to 3rd
century BC when Romans ruled the place. Since then the fort underwent many
changes; first it was a castle then it was used as a place to hide weapons,
then a military camping place during the Prussian times, a place to safe guard
the culture and archives of the city during World War 2, refugee shelter,
hostel and finally some beautiful museums were built. Today, the fort is open
to tourists with museums like Haus der Fotografie (photography), Haus der Archäologie (archaeology) and the Landesmuseum
Koblenz (temporary exhibitions) to witness. The
fort is also known as ‘Festung Koblenz’ and there are number of events that
take place here during summer months.
This fort also serves one of the best places for photo
lovers as it has various historic bricks and walls to shoot and one can also
capture the top view of the beautiful Rhine and city of Koblenz.
The fort can be visited by road or by cable car or
Seilbahn. Return trip of Seilbahn along with fort entrance costs about 11.80
Euro per person. However, students and senior citizens can avail tickets at
reduced price. One can also purchase family tickets and seasonal tickets for
multiple visits.
The fort is operational from 10.00 to 18.00 hrs in
the months of April to October and from 10.00 to 17.00 hrs in the months of November
to March. However, the Seilbahn remains closed in winter months.
Additional Tips: You would require a whole day to
witness the fort. Also, the fort is wheelchair and stroller friendly. Do not
forget to take your camera along!
